Vitamin C
Vitamin C, also known as
ascorbic acid, is necessary for general good health and strong bones and teeth. A
diet lacking in vitamin C can cause scurvy, a disease that affects the muscles, teeth, and
gums. Not having enough vitamin C in your diet can also slow down the healing of
wounds.
There is a common theory
that vitamin C cures certain illnesses such as the common cold. These claims have
not been proven. If you have any questions about your need for this vitamin, ask
your doctor or pharmacist. Your doctor may prescribe this vitamin for other
conditions.
Proper Use of Vitamin C
Eating a healthy diet is an
important source of vitamin C. Vegetables and fresh fruits contain vitamin C.
Do not take more vitamin C supplements than recommended.
Your body does not store vitamin
C, any extra is lost through urination. Stones can develop in the urinary tract if
there is too much vitamin C in the urine.
If your doctor recommends you
take this vitamin, remember to take it everyday. Take large doses of vitamin C only
with your doctors approval. If you are pregnant or nursing, do not take large doses
of vitamin C without your doctors approval.
