The Body's Allergic Response
A simple allergic reaction is not a disease. It is a response to substances that, in most individuals, go unnoticed. When you are exposed to airborne pollen through the nasal and sinus passages, and have an occasional allergic response, it's because your body identifies the pollen as an intruder. The body then produces an antibody, immuno-globulin E (IgE), to combat the pollen. IgE binds to mast cells found in tissue and basophils in the bloodstream.

Both types of cells contain granules filled with histamine and other chemicals referred to as mediators. The IgE on the mast cells causes them to break apart and release histamine into the surrounding tissues. Histamine, in turn, interacts with the receptors of cells lining the nasal and sinus cavity. The result is swelling of the sinus passages and the production of mucous. The same process occurs when your eyes are exposed to pollen.
