St. John's Wort - 300 mg
Helps maintain a healthy emotional balance*
St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a small flowering plant that enjoys dry, hot climates. It is commonly found in Europe and along the roadways and fields of the eastern United States. This plant, that looks more like a weed than a beneficial herb, has been used for centuries by herbalists worldwide. Ancient Greek writers describe its ability to ward off evil spirits. Those in medieval Europe believed that a piece of St. John's Wort could prolong life. Today, researchers have discovered that the active constituents in St. John's Wort appear to work synergistically to affect mood.
Researchers have determined that two of the brain's neurotransmitters, norepinephrine and serotonin, have positive effects on feelings of well-being. Studies show that the active constituents in St. John's Wort promote healthy levels of these two neurotransmitters in the brain. However, when levels of these two neurotransmitters drop, mood changes can occur, and a person can begin to feel uneasy and anxious. Researchers have found low levels of both these neurotransmitters in those individuals. The prestigious British Medical Journal has reported St. John's Wort's beneficial effects in a number of studies.
