Save Your Sight
It may not get quite the same attention as the super Bowl or a new millennium, but January is also Glaucoma Awareness Month.
Glaucoma affects people of all ages and is the leading cause of preventable blindness.
Glaucoma doesn't show warning signs, but with proper screening, the disease can be diagnosed and treated before permanent visual loss occurs. The Glaucoma Foundation recommends testing every four years if you are under 45, and then every two years after 45.
Some people, including African Americans, are at greater risk for
glaucoma. Other risk factors include diabetes, nearsightedness, previous eye injury,
regular use of steroid products, or a family history of glaucoma. If you have any of these
risk factors, you should be tested every two years if under 45, and then annually after
45.
