The health benefits of apples just keep adding up; now, if appears that a daily dose of apple juice keeps cholesterol at bay.
Researchers at the University of California at Davis have determined that apple juice reduces LDL (bad) cholesterol oxidation--the process that causes cholesterol to break down into its artery clogging form--by up to 34%. The juice apparently gets its cholesterol-attacking ability from its high concentration of phenols, plant-based compounds that are also present in red wine.
Though drinking apple juice may have specific health-benefits, there are good reasons to eat the whole fruit, as well. Much of an apple's healing power resides in the skin, which contains large amounts--about 4 milligrams--of a compound called quercetin. Like vitamin C and beta-carotene, this is an antioxidant compound that can help prevent harmful oxygen molecules from damaging individual cells. What's more, apples contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, including pectin, a compound that appears to reduce the amount of cholesterol produced in the liver.
