of the Week
Want a quick, drug-free fix for a throbbing headache? Touch your toes.
Studies demonstrate that reflexology--massaging specific pressure points on the extremities--may do as much for a pounding headache as for an aching sole.
In a recent study, 81% of the participants who had the foot treatment regularly for 6 months reported a drop in tension headaches and migraines. Many of the participants who had formerly taken medications to control their headaches were even able to stop taking the medication after the study ended. What's more, the benefits appeared to endure for months after the reflexology treatments had ceased.
Reflexologists use their hands to apply gentle pressure to reflex areas or nerve endings in the hands and feet to improve circulation and to encourage healing in other areas of the body.
Reflexology sessions last from 30 minutes to an hour and are generally done without oils or creams on bare skin. The pressure applied should feel comfortable--too much pressure can lead to injury--if something is uncomfortable or painful, do tell your reflexologist right away. At the end of a session, in general, you should feel relaxed.
