Derived from super-nutritious soybeans, soy milk is packed with protein, fiber, and--when fortified--calcium. What's more, soy milk contains no cholesterol--low-fat dairy milk contains 18 milligrams per cup. In fact, studies have shown that people who regularly consume soy products--including soy milk--have significantly lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels than those who don't eat soy products.
Best of all, soy milk comes in a variety of flavors, including chocolate and vanilla.
If you have high cholesterol levels, try substituting soy-based products for animal protein in your diet. The protein in soy products helps reduce cholesterol levels, though the cause of this has not yet been discovered. Some experts theorize that the soy works as an antioxidant on cholesterol. Others believe that soy may interfere with the formation of plaque, a substance that builds up inside arteries and eventually can cause atherosclerosis, the clogging of the arteries.
Soy milk, soy beans, and tofu (made from the soy bean curd) all deliver the same cholesterol-fighting effects. Soy also contains a natural estrogen that has been shown to reduce the risk of both breast and prostate cancers and to provide extra protection against osteoporosis.
