Soothing Stomachs
Flat ginger ale to tame a troubled
tummy? Apparently, Mom was on to something.
Sipping flat ginger ale has long been considered a
folk remedy for stomach upset, but studies have now proven that ginger may help ease the
severity of nausea and vomiting. To get relief, you can try flat ginger ale, ginger tea,
or ginger supplements (250 milligrams 4 times per day). No serious side effects--only
minor heartburn--have been reported from using ginger supplements to settle your stomach.
If you need relief from an uneasy stomach or from
morning sickness, try taking 250 milligrams of ginger (capsule, tablet, or powder) 4 times
per day. To prevent or treat nausea brought on by motion sickness, take 1,000 milligrams
of ginger 30 to 60 minutes before traveling. If you're planning to have surgery, taking
1,000 milligrams of ginger 30 to 60 minutes before the surgery may prevent nausea and
vomiting afterward.
