Keep Your Head
You wear a helmet when riding your bike, but how do you know it's the proper size?
If you don't have the right fit, you're taking a big risk.
Researchers recently demonstrated that wearing a poorly fitting helmet significantly
increases the risk of head injury in an accident. When choosing a helmet, start with the
smallest size, even if you think it will be too small. Find the smallest helmet that will
fit your head without causing discomfort.
The CDC reports that nearly 800 people die each year in the
U.S. from bicycle-related head injuries. Another 17,000 people are hospitalized each year
due to bicycle-related head injuries. Wearing a bicycle helmet can reduce the risk of head
injury by 85%, but wearing the helmet properly is key. Choose a snug fit and wear the
helmet low on your forehead.
