Hello, Friends -- So Long, Stress

Want to give stress the slip?  Spend more time with friends and loved ones.

Researchers have proven what many have suspected all along--that strong relationships reduce anxiety.  The findings indicate that when a person is in the presence of a spouse, partner, or good friends, the body's levels of oxytocin--an antistress hormone--are higher, especially when encountering a stressful situation.   Of course, some unhealthy relationships can cause you more stress: Yet another reason to make more time to socialize with the people you like.

Social connections not only reduce stress, they also ease depression, and in doing so, may make your immune system younger.  Although for years scientists discredited the effect of social factors on biological health, study after study has confirmed the importance of social connections.  It has been shown repeatedly that the effect of interpersonal relationships on stress responses has both positive psychological and physiological effects.  These ties can actually affect the number of immune cells you have, which in turn can affect your resistance to many diseases, including cancer.
