Oh, Oh, Oatmeal

Want to drop a few pounds? Open your mind--and your mouth--to oatmeal.

Researchers studied the effects of different breakfast foods and found that people who ate oatmeal instead of cornflakes consumed significantly fewer calories at their next meal. The reason? Oatmeal's high fiber content, which probably helps you feel full longer. Add that to the several studies that have shown that eating oatmeal regularly helps reduce unhealthy cholesterol levels and you've got the one-two punch of a breakfast champ.

Clearly, not all of us are--or should be--pencil thin. The point is to be the right weight for your height and build. Having a low body-mass index--or weight-to-height ratio--is one of the things that will help keep you young. Low-fat eating, in combination with exercise, is the easiest and quickest way to lose weight and to keep your weight where it should be. Moderation and balance are the key principles when it comes to eating for youth.
